Introduction

In this blog post, we will utilize the ElectroPhy device to analyze Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM). To begin with, let's understand what SHM is. It refers to motion where the displacement is a sinusoidal function of time.

Aim

The purpose of this experiment is to determine if the pendulum motion exhibits Simple Harmonic Motion (SHM). If it does, we will then proceed to measure its period of oscillation.

Theory

When a body is at equilibrium, the net external force acting on it is zero. If the body is moved from its equilibrium position, a force known as the restoring force will act on the body, attempting to return it to its equilibrium position. This leads to oscillations.

In the illustration below (taken from the NCERT book), the pendulum is shifted from its equilibrium position, causing the restoring force/torque to be mg sin ฮธ.
